Technical Advisor of the Black Stars, Winfried Anton Schafer, has expressed his sadness over Ghana’s inability to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

According to him, it is a great concern that the Black Stars, with their reputation, were unable to qualify for the continental showpiece.

The German coach noted that his previous stint with the Cameroon national team, which helped them win the AFCON title, makes him feel the loss the team have suffered.

“I am a keen follower of African football, thanks to my previous experience with Cameroon and our AFCON title win. I am sad about Ghana’s absence. That’s all I can say for now,” he said, as reported by AfricaSoccer.com.

This comes after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON sparking widespread criticism.

Following the disappointment, the GFA restructured the technical team, retaining Otto Addo and John Paintsil in their roles as head coach and assistant, respectively.

To strengthen the team, Winfried Schafer was appointed as Technical Advisor.

Their task will be to qualify the team for the 2026 World Cup, with the qualifiers set to resume in March 2025.
