Accra Hearts of Oak were set to return to their famous home ground, the Accra Sports Stadium, after being away for several months.

The stadium was closed for renovations in September 2024 due to concerns about its condition, prompting the Accra-based club to temporarily adopt the University of Ghana Stadium as their home ground.

Following initial renovation work ahead of the Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad in March 2025, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) deemed the stadium suitable for matches and announced that the Phobians would be making their return.

However, the National Sports Authority (NSA) refuted these claims, citing several reasons why Hearts of Oak could not use the stadium.

According to the NSA, the GFA’s letter requesting permission for Hearts of Oak to use the stadium was received too late, making it impossible to complete the necessary protocols and preparations required to host the game.

The NSA also stated that the GFA announced the venue without first securing a formal agreement. They emphasised that proper procedures and approvals had not been completed before the announcement was made.

Despite this, the NSA reaffirmed its commitment to making the Accra Sports Stadium ready to host matches again.

To this end, they have engaged with key stakeholders and are actively assessing the feasibility of the stadium’s full return to operation.

As a result of the NSA’s refusal, Hearts of Oak will now face Nations FC at the Tuba Astroturf on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
