King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II is the Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II is the Ga Mantse

The Supreme Court on July 23, 2025, quashed the ruling of the Kumasi High Court and the Court of Appeal in Kumasi, which ordered the National House of Chiefs to restore the name of Nii Tackie Adama Latse II to its National Register as Ga Mantse and the removal of King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II from the register.

The ruling of the Court was on an application filed by Nii Tsuru II, challenging the order of the Kumasi High Court, which was reaffirmed by the Court of Appeal in Kumasi.

The full judgment of the Supreme Court has now been made available to the public.

In the document, the five-member panel of the Supreme Court, which was chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang and had Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu, Justice Adjei-Frimpong, Justice G.S. Suurbaareh, as well as Justice P.B. Mensah as members, explained why King Tsuru II’s name could not be replaced with that of Nii Adama Latse II.

The Supreme Court justices ruled that since the ruling affects King Tsuru II, the Court should have heard him before delivering its judgment.

They pointed out that the current Ga Mantse’s right to be heard was violated by the two courts which heard the case brought before them by Nii Adama Latse II.

“In view of what we have explained above, the Court is of the opinion that the decision of the High Court, Kumasi, cannot stand. The statutory rights the Applicant is seeking to enforce in these proceedings are personal to him, and he cannot be denied on the ground that someone related to him participated in the High Court proceedings.

“In the circumstances, we grant an order of certiorari directed at the High Court, Kumasi, in Suit No. GJMISC/81/21 entitled Republic v National House of Chiefs, Ex parte: Nii Tackie Adama Latse & Anor, Nii Tetteh Ashong – Interested Party, for the decision of the Court dated 12th November, 2021, in that case to be brought to the Supreme Court for the purpose of being quashed, and same is hereby quashed,” part of the ruling reads.
