Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has reportedly not had access to the £2.5 billion derived from the sale of the club in 2022.

According to Sky Sports, the Russian billionaire has not accessed the money in three years, as his UK account remains frozen.

The report suggests that the UK government’s intended use of the funds contradicts Abramovich’s wishes, as he wants the money to benefit “all victims of the war”, which would include Russians.

Meanwhile, the UK government insists the funds should be directed toward “humanitarian causes in Ukraine.”

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office confirmed the UK government’s stance on the matter.

“This government is working hard to ensure the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea FC reach humanitarian causes in Ukraine as quickly as possible.”

The spokesperson also affirmed that Abramovich’s account remains frozen while they work on disbursing the money.

“The proceeds are currently frozen in a UK bank account while a new independent foundation is established to manage and distribute the funds.

“UK officials continue to hold discussions with Mr. Abramovich’s representatives, experts, and international partners, and we will double down on our efforts to reach a resolution,” he added.

Roman Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea after 19 years of ownership due to his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
