Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr Prosper Akanbong, has said that the commission is looking into developing larger condom sizes for Ghanaian males.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News on February 13, 2026, Dr Akanbong spoke on the commission’s strategies to enhance condom use among Ghanaians.
Why Ghana is introducing a National Condom and Lubricant Strategy
Dr Akanbong then shockingly revealed that, per initial research by the commission, many men were ditching condoms due to them being too small and being prone to bursting.
“We have gotten to know that there were some times that there were condoms in the system, but they said they were smaller for Ghanaian men, and then they were bursting because Ghanaian men are quite endowed,” he revealed.
He detailed that the commission will do further research into the low patronage of condoms and work to develop condoms that would be more suitable for Ghanaian males.
“We need to ramp up our condom use. The next condom strategy will look at the reasons why men are not using condoms that well. So that we can also develop and get condoms that are more friendly to the Ghanaian males,” he disclosed.
Dr Akanbong disclosed this as the world marks World Condom Day on 14 February.
He stated that the commission will embark on a free condom-sharing exercise across the country to boost condom use in order to prevent unwanted pregnancies and STIs.
