President John Dramani Mahama has explained his striking decision to wear the Ghana Air Force ceremonial uniform at the Ghana Military Academy’s officer commissioning ceremony held on January 30, 2026.

Despite having no personal military service, President Mahama, who serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, has made it a tradition to appear in full military regalia at major official ceremonies of the Ghana Armed Forces. For the 2026 commissioning, he arrived dressed in the sky-blue colours of the Ghana Air Force.

According to a report by Woezor TV on its Facebook page, the president’s choice was intended as “a tribute to the dedication and sacrifice of Air Force personnel who work tirelessly to safeguard the nation.”

This follows a similar appearance at last year’s commissioning ceremony, where President Mahama turned heads in the Ghana Navy’s crisp white ceremonial uniform, complete with full accoutrements.

Joining the President at the commissioning ceremony, the number of graduating cadets for which remains unconfirmed, were the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, and the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi.

Photos of President Mahama in the Air Force uniform have since sparked widespread discussion on the airwaves, with many praising the gesture as a strong show of solidarity with Ghana’s security forces.
