Popular Ghanaian filmmaker, Ola Michael, has questioned why some television stations are granted licenses to operate despite lacking original content.

Speaking on United Showbiz on June 14, 2025, he expressed concern over what he described as the blatant disregard for copyright laws and broadcasting regulations by some of these stations.

He specifically accused certain church-owned TV stations of airing pirated movies while using the platform to promote their churches.

According to him, these stations fund their operations using offerings and tithes collected from church members, only to turn around and violate intellectual property rights.

“Some of these one-man churches that own TV stations use the offerings and tithes collected from their congregation to pay monthly dues to the NCA. They even collect special contributions from members,” he said.

“Yet they illegally broadcast other people’s movies and advertise their churches in between,” he added.

Ola Michael also raised concerns about the increasing number of stations promoting herbalists, spiritualists, and money doublers, many of whom advertise openly on these platforms, often alongside pirated content, with no apparent consequences.

He questioned why the National Communications Authority (NCA) continues to issue licences to such stations when they clearly lack legitimate programming.

“Some of these TV stations allow herbalists and money doublers to advertise while showing pirated movies. What baffles me is: how do they get a licence? Because they don’t have content. So why are they licensed?” he asked.
