A former Black Stars management committee member, Ernest Thompson, has disclosed that former national team coach Kwasi Appiah wanted to get rid of some key players in the team.

According to him, because of certain issues, Appiah decided to kick out key players like Jordan Ayew, Dede Ayew, and Mubarak Wakaso.

Thompson indicated that after the players’ offence, Kwasi Appiah dropped them from the squad because he was aggrieved by the act, which was not specified.

In an interview with Joy FM, Thompson said that the Black Stars management committee at the time advised Appiah to revert his decision due to the legacy of Abedi Pele in Ghana football.

“At a point in time, Kwasi Appiah had problems with Andre, Jordan, and Wakaso. He said he had dropped them. We said, look, because of their father Abedi [Pele], if you have problems with them in the team, we plead with you to go and see Abedi and speak to him because you can’t treat his children that way.

“Let the father know and see if he can intervene. It took Alhaji Hearts, who we called to also go and speak to the boys about Kwasi Appiah’s concerns. Later, Kwasi Appiah agreed, brought them back, and they came to save the team,” he said.

Kwasi Appiah’s tenure as Black Stars head coach was marred with controversies among the players over funds during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The coach, following Ghana’s group stage exit, was sacked and has currently led the Sudan national team to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Ghana, however, could not make it to the continental showpiece for the first time in 20 years.
