Renowned Ghanaian media personality and Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency, Kofi Okyere Darko, popularly known as KOD, has made a bold statement that has sparked discussions online.

In an interview with the Ghanaian Times, shared on X on December 1, 2025, KOD expressed his reservations about the Detty December brand, noting that he does not fully embrace the concept.

According to him, December in Ghana should not be solely about entertainment but also an opportunity for people living in the diaspora to invest in the Ghanaian economy.

“Personally, I’m not a great fan of Detty December, and it’s one of the reasons we’re hosting events like the Diaspora Summit under the auspices of the President between the 19th and 20th of December.

“Many people from the diaspora are coming to Ghana. They are not all here just to have fun. Some are here for business opportunities. I want us to go beyond the Detty December concept, as it offers great opportunities for us to network and bring money home,” he said.

KOD’s comment follows recent online debates after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, suggested that the name “Detty December” portrays a negative impression of the country.

    When was Detty December coined?

The term Detty December, which refers to the wave of parties, festivals, and musical concerts that take place in Ghana throughout December, was coined by popular Ghanaian creative, Benard Sokpe, known as ‘Mr Meister’.

In an earlier exclusive interview with GhanaWeb on May 6, 2025, Mr Meister, a former manager of Nigerian singer Mr. Eazi, noted that the term “Detty December” was coined in 2019 when they needed the perfect event name for their artiste.

“At that time, we used to call him ‘Detty Boy’. So for that December concert, ‘Life is Easy’, we decided to call it ‘Detty December’ because it was going to be a fun, exciting December. It was about showing the full extent of enjoying December to the max,” he said.

Meanwhile, KOD’s statement has triggered massive reactions online, as some netizens have criticised him for not supporting what they describe as the one thing that makes December in Ghana exciting.
