A UK-based Ghanaian artiste manager, George Britton, has attributed the gap between Ghana and Nigeria’s music industries to a lack of business acumen and a focus on negativity.

In an interview with Sammy Flex TV, Britton noted that Nigerians dominate the UK music scene, filling large stadiums and achieving successes that surpass those of local artists.

When asked why Ghanaian artistes have been unable to reach such heights internationally, Britton pointed out that Ghanaian musicians fail to treat their craft as a business.

“I don’t think we Ghanaians take the music we do as business. You will have to build partnerships, and you are in a space where people bring money, people bring other things to help you get to the top. But we don’t take advantage of that,” he said.

Britton also criticised Ghana’s media for perpetuating negativity, which he claims has created a detrimental image of the country on the world stage.

In contrast, he said Nigeria has successfully cultivated a positive international image, with Nigerians often being regarded as successful individuals in the UK.

“When you’re here and you look back home, the things we see on our radio and TV, we focus too much on negativity.

“Yes, there’s negative news in Nigeria as well, but what we don’t see is that outside Nigeria, they’ve been able to create an image for themselves internationally,” he said.

Britton’s comments come as more calls have been made for Ghanaian creatives to be proactive in their approach to their craft.
