Former Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has criticised the government over what he described as the growing impunity of arrests and harassment of individuals in the country.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who also served as the former Majority Leader, said some recent arrests carried out by the state security apparatus were uncalled for, particularly those involving individuals linked to the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.

“The way people are using the OSP to arrest others, and how ORAL, NIB and EOCO are arresting people with impunity, where are we going as a nation?” citinewsroom.com quoted him as saying.

“To the best of my knowledge, they have not been able to file charges or initiate court proceedings against anyone.”

His remarks follow the detention of several prominent figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, October 6, 2025, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu urged President John Dramani Mahama to address human rights concerns in his next State of the Nation Address (SoNA).

‘I have not made any such comment’ – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu denies making insensitive comment

“Where are we heading as a nation? I’m not happy with what’s happening. The arrest of Wontumi, Abronye, and some former ministers who are now required to report every week is certainly not the best of circumstances,” he said.

He added that if anyone, including NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (popularly known as Wontumi), had done anything wrong, due process should be followed.

“If Wontumi has done anything wrong, you go to him. I understand they have even confiscated 15 vehicles. These are matters all of us should be concerned about,” he stressed.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu expressed deep concern over the arrest of leading NPP members, including Wontumi, Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye) and some former ministers, who he said are being compelled to report weekly to the authorities.
