IMANI Africa’s vice president, Selorm Brantie, has called on Hon. Ursula Owusu, the departing minister of communication and digitization, to give a statement detailing her activities while in office. In a December 8, 2024, Facebook post, he demanded openness about a number of projects and choices made during her tenure.

Selorm underlined that Ursula must compile and distribute crucial documents pertaining to her work. He emphasized several points that need to be clarified, such the controversial SIM re-registration procedure. He questioned the manner in which this procedure was carried out and the amount of money awarded to the participating company. Additionally, Selorm asked for details regarding the chain of custody for this sensitive data as well as the management of biometric data gathered during registration.

He also demanded an examination of the businesses and middlemen involved in Ghana’s 5G rollout, including a thorough report on the taxes paid by the Ministry’s technology partner KelniGVG and an evaluation of the business’s operational worth. Selorm also requested information about the Vokacom-developed GhanaPost GPS app and a comprehensive list of all procurement contracts that were authorized while she was in office.

In his post, Selorm suggested that Ursula Owusu consider obtaining legal representation, implying that she may face challenging inquiries from the public regarding these matters. “Fortunately, there’s no clearing agent in charge now. Ghana needs some oral hygiene, and your submissions will assist in that regard,” he remarked, seemingly criticizing the government’s previous approach to accountability.

This statement follows Ursula Owusu’s loss of her parliamentary seat to the NDC’s Rev. Kweku Addo in the 2024 general elections. With the NPP losing power to John Dramani Mahama’s NDC, her roles as both minister and MP have come to an end.
