The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has challenged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to provide evidence that Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stole public funds in the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.
He dismissed the NPP’s demonstration against the minister over the South Africa evacuation controversy as a “total joke”, accusing the opposition party of engaging in what he described as low-level politics.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with JoyNews’ Evans Mensah, Mr Kwetey said the minister was being targeted by the NPP because of his role in exposing alleged wrongdoing during the previous administration.
“My brother is just facing what some of us faced in 2009 when we won power. That’s what the NPP does. When they feel that you played a major role in causing them to lose power, they come at you with every venom; they want you destroyed at all costs,” he said.
He added that the situation reflected what he described as the NPP’s failure to evolve politically.
Mr Kwetey questioned the basis for the opposition party’s criticism of Mr Ablakwa, arguing that the minister’s actions in exposing alleged wrongdoing under the previous government had made him a target.
When asked whether he believed the minister was being targeted because of his past actions against the NPP, he responded: “Of course he’s targeted.”
Addressing concerns about discrepancies in documents released by the Foreign Affairs Ministry in the South Africa evacuation, including questions over signatures and alleged duplications, Mr Kwetey described them as peripheral to the broader issues raised by Mr Ablakwa against the previous administration.
He argued that while the minister had provided what he described as “hardcore evidence” of alleged stealing and abuse under the NPP government, the opposition had yet to produce comparable evidence against him.
“He was providing evidence, hardcore evidence, of stealing that was going on, of abuse that was going on. Providing authentic documentation. Have they been able to provide anything like that? Money was given to you at the airport.
“Five thousand given to you, five hundred added. You collected; you didn’t report that it was shot at the airport. You waited. One week, no report. Two weeks, no report. Three weeks, no report. One month, no report. Two months, three months, four months. You are a crook. That’s what you are. And anybody who actually collaborates with that is a crook as well.”
Turning to the NPP demonstration, he questioned the basis for the protest and accused the party of fishing for allegations against the Foreign Affairs Minister.
“Especially on this foreign affairs one. It’s a total joke to go and do a demonstration. Demonstration on the back of what?” he asked.
He further accused the NPP of relying on what he described as low-level politics, insisting that Ghanaians expected a different standard of political engagement.
“How desperate can you be? NPP, long may you continue doing what you’re doing. You haven’t seen anything yet. You’re going to remain in this position for a long time, unless you wake up and realize that Ghanaians have long passed this very low-level politics.”
