A former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey, has expressed support for the Kumasi Mayor in his attempt to make the city clean for everyone.

According to him, when the city is clean, even visitors will love to come back with good reports.

“I am just hoping and believing the measures put in place by the assembly will go a long way to meet the target. To be honest, I agree with what he’s saying, there’s absolute sense in what he’s saying. I only disagree with him on flogging the traders when they refuse to comply but what he said is the truth,” he indicated.

In a UTV video posted on X on April 16, 2025, Nartey called for support for and urged traders to comply with the assembly to help deliver and achieve results.

He made this comment in reaction to the Kumasi Mayor, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi’s remarks that were made ahead of a planned two-week decongestion exercise which has drawn widespread condemnations, with calls from the public for him to retract his statement and offer an apology.

Despite the backlash, the Mayor stood by his comments to flog traders who flout rules regarding the use of pedestrian walkways, arguing that the threat of flogging is necessary to restore discipline and cleanliness in Kumasi.

“I don’t believe in using the police for decongestion because I will spend so much on them, and after that, we will get back to the status quo,” he stated.

Boadi said Kumasi is engulfed with filth, and there is a need to deal with it head-on.

He also stated that it is unacceptable for people to cook and sell food in the middle of the road.
