Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has condemned the inhumane act by an individual who stabbed Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as Pooley, to death.

According to him, the perpetrator intentionally planned to stab Pooley to death, considering how the incident occurred during a chaotic scene at Nsoatre.

The former GFA boss noted that the demise of the Kotoko fan raises concerns about safety at various match venues for football officials.

“People get agitated over refereeing decisions. The May 9, 2001, incident remains one of the biggest disasters in Ghana football history. We always pray against such incidents, but this is a deliberate action to kill someone.

“The perpetrator might have been remorseful by now, but it’s too late. You have hurt the deceased’s wife and family,” he said in Twi during an interview with Kessben FM.

Nyantakyi called on clubs and footballing authorities to embark on intensive sensitization on hooliganism at stadiums and its repercussions.

“So, club officials, referees, and other stakeholders should educate people on how to comport themselves at the stadium. We should not take the law into our hands and take someone’s life, because there is no return. There should be thorough education on hooliganism in football to prevent similar incidents in the future,” he advised.

Pooley was stabbed during Kotoko’s game against Nsoatreman on February 2, 2025.

The Ghana Police Service have arrested some individuals believed to be involved in the chaotic incident that led to the demise of the Asante Kotoko supporter.
