Several Ghanaian public figures have been reacting online following the arrest of popular businessman Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, who is facing charges in connection with an alleged $8 million romance scam targeting elderly victims in the United States.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) confirmed Kumi’s arrest on December 11, 2025, after a joint operation with U.S. and Ghanaian law enforcement agencies.

Prosecutors claimed that Abu Trica used artificial intelligence and fabricated identities to deceive victims into sending money under false pretences.

However, following his arrest, various personalities on and off social media have been commenting on Trica’s arrest.

While some have justified the actions of Trica, others have warned against flaunting illegally obtained wealth online and questioned why Trica was arrested while corrupt government officials remain free.

    Shatta Wale:

The dancehall musician advised people who earn money through fraudulent means to be careful about flaunting their wealth on social media.

He also dismissed allegations linking him to fraud and attributing his success to God and his music career.

    Kwaku Manu:

In a video making waves on X, the Kumawood actor was seen justifying the actions of Trica and various other individuals involved in fraud.

He claimed that Ghanaians had always been scammed by the whites with shady business deals. Thus, Trica and the others are only recollection what was taken.

    Papi Adabraka:

The musician critisized people who engage in illegal activities yet invite bloggers to showcase their lifestyle, comparing it to “a thief doing an advert.”

Papi explained that legitimate celebrities like Shatta Wale can publicly display their assets because their income is traceable through music streams and business ventures, but those with questionable income sources risk exposure to law enforcement.

    Blakk Rasta

Ghanaian musician and radio presenter Blakk Rasta accused Abu Trica of selfishness. He revealed that despite the display of wealth, the suspect’s father is a carpenter and his mother still sells tilapia at the Swedru Market.

The former member of the Ghanaian music group 4X4 claimed that he would never be suspected of fraud due to his strict social media privacy practices.

In a series of posts on X, he stated that he would avoid showcasing personal details or signs of wealth online and would prevent tracking.

He also criticized the selective application of the law, noting that corrupt politicians often escape punishment while ordinary citizens face consequences.

    Bishop Bonegas:

Bishop Bonegas argued that the government has fundamentally failed in its duty to protect its citizens.
