Discussions about artistes, record labels, and contracts in the entertainment industry, particularly music, often become contentious, with artistes and labels at odds over agreements.

According to artiste manager and entertainment critic Bullgod, about 90 percent of Ghanaian creatives sign deals without legal representation and do not fully understand the contracts they commit to.

Bullgod noted that this issue is not limited to creatives alone. He pointed out that even the average person signing up on social media platforms often ignores the terms and conditions before accepting them.

“90% of Ghanaian artistes have signed contracts that they did not understand. I’m assuming you have a Facebook page, but the terms and conditions you don’t read. These are contracts you have signed,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV.

The artiste manager also shared advice for young creatives, urging them to avoid signing with labels if they do not want to be controlled by external parties, even if it may take longer to “blow.”

“So my advice to every artiste or young artiste that’s coming up there: if you don’t want control, do the ‘road’ because you will get there. Maybe you get there in 30 years, maybe in 40 years, we’ll still be here. Gladly for you, we’ll be here and listen to you. If you are a young creative, don’t be in a hurry. Do your hustle. If you can’t do your hustle, then respect authority or understand what you are going through,” Bullgod noted.

He further observed that one challenge in the industry is that many young artistes are in a rush to attain fame.

“Everybody is in a hurry to blow. I don’t know where they are going. I don’t know whether they have the timeframe they have to meet,” he added.

Bullgod’s statements follow accusations by rapper Kwesi Arthur against music executive Glen Boateng and members of the Ground Up Chale team, a label he was previously signed to.

Kwesi Arthur has alleged intimidation, financial demands, and attempts to block his independent music releases.

He claimed that he is being asked to pay $150,000 to use images of himself for a current project and warned that his safety could be at risk amid the ongoing dispute with his former management.

However, the lawyer for Ground Up Chale, Jonathan Amable, has rejected claims that the company has prevented Kwesi Arthur from using his images. He clarified that the artiste was only restricted from using specific footage owned by the label.
