West Ham striker Michail Antonio has had surgery on a fractured leg following his horrific car accident on Saturday.
The Premier League club confirmed today that the 34-year-old would remain in hospital under supervision of medical staff.
Antonio crashed his silver Ferrari on Saturday lunchtime in Epping Forest, Essex and was trapped for more than 45 minutes as fire crews worked to free him from his car.
West Ham had released a statement last night to say Antonio was in a stable condition after being rushed to a central London hospital and was ‘conscious and communicating’ while he remained under close supervision by medical staff.
‘West Ham can confirm Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following a road traffic accident on Saturday afternoon,’ a club statement read.
‘Michail will continue to be monitored in hospital over the coming days. Everyone at the Club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news, as well as extending a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michail in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and the medical team who continue to aid him in his recovery.’

Antonio is West Ham’s all-time top goalscorer in the Premier League having netted 68 times
Antonio is set for a long spell on the sidelines and, at 34, it remains to be seen if he will be able to restart his career.
West Ham were not in action on Saturday with the club due to face Wolves on Monday night with Antonio having started 11 of the club’s 14 Premier League games so far this season.
He is West Ham’s all-time Premier League top goal scorer having netted 68 times in the top flight.
Antonio had previously been involved in a car accident on Christmas Day back in 2019. The footballer had crashed his Lamborghini in Balham, south London while dressed as a snowman after losing control of his car.
