The Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem Sai has said that the independent audit which was commissioned into the expenditure of the National Cathedral by the government is still on going.

Speaking on State of Affairs on GHOne TV on Monday, October 20, 2025, the Deputy Attorney General said the government will take action following the conclusion of the independent audit.

“Monies were spent which did not get the right or proper approval, the legal approval. And so that is why I said they are auditing to quantify that amount of money [spent without the right or proper approval]…,” he told host, Bernice Abu-Baidoo Lansah.

This auditing, the Senior Law Lecturer continued is different from what is already in the public domain.

“What we have in the public domain is information generally saying that we have spent this amount of money but not that whole amount is criminal, a component of it were spent without proper approval, that is what we are zeroing on…,” the deputy Attorney General added.

Dr Srem Sai continued that the independent external auditors are seeking to quantify how much of the monies which were spent without auditing are recoverable.

“The investigations are ongoing, what we have now is a question of auditing so we have engaged external auditors who are trying to quantify how much is recoverable…,” he added.

He further revealed what he thought was the main departure of Ghanaians as far at the building of the national cathedral was concerned.

“Don’t forget that the main issue with the national cathedral was one of priority; so Ghanaians were angry with the project because it came at a time where things were hard for Ghanaians; peoples’ pensions were not being paid, people were being given haircut as we knew it and then we are building a cathedral, I think that was the main point of the anger but that is not a crime, it’s a government priority.

“If government says I will let the people die and I will build a Cathedral, you can’t really charge the government for making that decision. The punishment for that is when you subject yourself to popular election, they will vote against you…,” he said.
