The Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL) has announced a planned shutdown of the Weija Water Treatment Plant on Friday, December 19, 2025.

This is to allow for critical maintenance works aimed at improving water service delivery.

In a statement issued by its Communications Department, the company said the plant would be taken out of operation from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to facilitate essential technical works as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure the reliability and integrity of its water infrastructure.

The temporary shutdown is expected to disrupt water supply to several parts of the Greater Accra area, including Accra Central, Dansoman, Mallam, Weija, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Abeka La Paz, Tesano, Kokomlemle, Alajo, Nima, Maamobi, Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe and adjoining communities.

Management of the company has assured customers and stakeholders that adequate resources and logistics have been mobilised to ensure that the maintenance works are completed within the scheduled timeframe.

Technical teams, according to the statement, will work assiduously to restore operations promptly after the exercise.

Customers in the affected areas have been advised to store sufficient water ahead of the shutdown period to minimise the impact of the interruption on households, businesses and institutions.

Adam Mutawakilu, the Managing Director of GWL, said: “this maintenance exercise is crucial for sustaining the integrity of our water infrastructure and improving service delivery.”

He added that the Company had deployed all necessary resources and would “work diligently to complete the task on schedule.”

The company expressed regret over any inconvenience the temporary disruption might cause and appealed to the public for cooperation and understanding as it undertakes the works to enhance long-term water supply reliability.
