Ghanaian female weightlifter Marie Agbah-Hughes has revealed that lack of financial support and injuries have been among the biggest challenges in her weightlifting endeavors.

She explained that despite being a member of Ghana’s women’s weightlifting team, she does not receive monetary aid from the state and has had to fund everything herself.

The female weightlifter noted that her consistent lifting of equipment has resulted in injuries unrelated to the sport, which sometimes hinder her progress.

“Weightlifting is a repetitive sport. The same movements are repeated over and over to fine-tune techniques, ensuring safety while lifting and avoiding injury. I’ve had injuries unrelated to weightlifting, such as an accident that forced me to take a break and start over,” she said while speaking on Sports Check, aired on GhanaWeb TV.

Agbah-Hughes also called on state institutions and prominent personalities to provide financial support and other forms of assistance.

“So, it hasn’t been the smoothest journey. As a national team member, I haven’t received financial support. It’s been difficult paying for everything weightlifting-related.

“Representing Ghana on an international platform is an honor, but it would be nice to have support. Unfortunately, I haven’t received any support up until this day,” she added.

Meanwhile, catch up on the latest Sports Check with weightlifter Marie Agbah-Hughes on GhanaWeb TV below:
