Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara finds himself under mounting pressure ahead of Sunday’s crucial Ghana Premier League clash with Karela United at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ouattara, who has faced criticism from fans and frequent tension with journalists, knows that another disappointing result could cost him his job.

Despite guiding the Phobians through a strong spell earlier this year that saw them climb into the top four, recent results have been underwhelming. Hearts have picked up just one win in their last five matches (two draws and two defeats), slipping to 7th place on the table with 41 points.

The team’s defence remains one of the strongest in the league, with only 17 goals conceded. However, their attacking returns have been modest, with just 22 goals scored in 27 games. On home soil, Hearts have been inconsistent, recording three wins and two losses in their last five fixtures.

Karela United, meanwhile, are in urgent need of points. A 2-0 defeat to FC Samartex 1996 on Wednesday has left them 16th with 28 points. Their attack continues to falter, having scored only 17 goals this season — the joint-lowest in the league. Their away form offers little encouragement, with four defeats and a draw in their last five trips.

The head-to-head record at the Accra Sports Stadium leans slightly in favour of Hearts, who are unbeaten in four home league games against Karela since 2020 — one win and three draws. Last season, the Phobians secured a 3-1 victory in their most recent meeting at the venue.

Sunday’s outcome could determine the immediate future of Ouattara, while Karela seek crucial survival points in the capital.
