Asante Kotoko made a strong return to competitive football with a 2-0 victory over Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Stadium, reclaiming the top spot in the Ghana Premier League.

The Porcupine Warriors are now level on points with Bibiani GoldStars but sit at the summit due to their superior goal difference.

Before kick-off, there was an emotional tribute to the late Nana Pooley, a passionate Kotoko supporter who was tragically stabbed in a recent act of hooliganism.

A minute’s silence was observed, and Kotoko players displayed a banner in his honour.

Despite being out of action for over a month due to the league’s suspension following Pooley’s tragic death, Kotoko showed no signs of rust.

They controlled the game from the start and took the lead in the 29th minute through full-back Patrick Asiedu. He unleashed a brilliant strike from the edge of the box, curling the ball into the bottom left corner, leaving the Legon Cities goalkeeper helpless.

Kotoko continued to dominate but had to wait until the 87th minute to seal the win. Striker Kwame Opoku won a penalty and confidently converted it, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to double their advantage.

Kotoko finished with 71% possession and 11 goal attempts, while Legon Cities struggled to make an impact, failing to register a single shot on target.

The win puts Kotoko back on top of the league, while Legon Cities remain in the relegation zone, still searching for consistency.
