Former Ghana international Augustine Ahinful has weighed in on the ongoing crisis within the Ghana Football Association (GFA), attributing Ghana’s struggles to the failure to appoint a competent coach.

For the first time in two decades, Ghana failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), prompting widespread calls for reforms. Many fans are also demanding the dismissal of Head Coach Otto Addo.

In an interview with JoySports, Ahinful, who once represented the Black Stars, asserted that the GFA’s inability to hire the right coach was a major factor in Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

“If they [GFA] had hired the best coaches, we wouldn’t be here. I’m not saying the people they hired are the worst, but if they had brought in the best coaches and put proper structures in place, we might have qualified for the AFCON,” he said.

Ghana managed just three points during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, drawing three matches and losing three. They finished at the bottom of their group, marking a disappointing campaign.
