The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, has stated that he is open to testing Ghana’s constitutional term limits to allow President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third term in office.

According to him, he is of the view that presidential term limits hinder national development.

Speaking in an interview with KSM on December 16, 2025, the MP stated that his position is not motivated by a personal desire for Mahama to seek a third term, but rather by his opposition to presidential term limits.

“I am a hundred percent third term person not because I want JM [John Mahama] to go for a third term, but it’s because I don’t believe in term limits. I believe that if we have somebody who is building, we must allow the person to build,” he said.

‘Preserve your legacy’ – President Mahama advised to resist third-term pressure

A Plus, as he is commonly known, said that discussions about a possible third term are inevitable and should not be suppressed, adding that even President Mahama cannot stop supporters from challenging the law.

“Even John Mahama cannot stop us from testing the law. We are not interested in term limits,” he noted.

The Gomoa Central MP compared Ghana’s constitution to the systems in countries like China and the United Arab Emirates, claiming they have achieved rapid development without strict presidential term limits.

He further suggested that resistance to a potential third term is largely driven by political self-interest, claiming critics fear losing future opportunities to gain power.

“If China had term limits, they wouldn’t have developed. UAE and all the countries that have developed, are more sensible than us. They are going to space and all and have removed term limits. Some of them [countries] don’t have at all. Some of them have different laws that favor their progress, and they can see what is happening in just one term.

“They know that if there is a third term, they will never come to power again, so they are fighting their personal interest,” he said.

A Plus expressed confidence in President Mahama’s leadership, saying that another four years in office could rapidly accelerate national development.

“Can you imagine John Mahama having another four years to build this country? You are talking about Las Vegas. John Mahama will build. All the man is looking for is a legacy project,” A Plus expressed.

A Plus also acknowledged that although President John Dramani Mahama has stated that he does not plan to seek a third term, critics are concerned that public pressure could eventually make him reconsider.

NDC will not amend constitution – Fifi Kwetey rejects Mahama third-term agenda

“Look, John Mahama himself has stated clearly that he doesn’t want a third term so, they are scared that one day the people of Ghana will rise up in their numbers and say, ‘JM we want you’… so their fear is not John Mahama… what everybody is scared about is that there can be a movement that will say, ‘you are not going anywhere. Let’s keep developing until we are tired with you’,” he concluded.
