Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has called for a discussion on making the salaries and emoluments of state officials public.

According to him, these individuals are paid with taxpayers’ money, and it is of interest to the ordinary taxpayer to know how much is given to them for their service to the country.

In a series of tweets on X, formerly known as Twitter, he also called for a probe into parliamentary expenditure.

“We use taxpayers’ money to pay our President and his appointees; we need to know how much money we pay them,” one of his tweets read.

He continued, “Why should we expect MPs to donate big money at ceremonies when we don’t know how much money they earn? How much do Ministers earn? How much does the President earn? Let’s have public knowledge and conversation on these issues.”

“I vote in Ho Central Constituency, and I want to know how much my MP earns,” Anyidoho added.

He questioned the allegations that some MPs take per diem for travel but do not travel.

“I’m just thinking: Parliament has a Public Accounts Committee that probes into public finances and expenditure. I ask; who/what/which probes the expenditure of Parliament? Is it true that some MPs take per diem for foreign travels but never travel? Let’s ask questions.”

“We must begin to probe the expenditure of Ghana’s Parliament.”
