Popular Ghanaian broadcast journalist Kafui Dey has called for the institutionalisation of a policy to honour the legacy of late music legend Daddy Lumba.

According to Kafui Dey, a policy that would be celebrated annually in memory of Daddy Lumba would be the surest way to keep his memory alive forever, to demonstrate his legendary status.

Speaking to GhanaWeb reporter Isaac Dadze, Kafui Dey emphasised that honouring Daddy Lumba‘s legacy should go beyond erecting monuments.

He cited the example of Fela Kuti’s annual celebration in Nigeria known as Felabration, which has been ongoing for twenty years after his death.

He said, “Fela died about twenty years ago, and every year they have a celebration called Felabration. Every year, they have a musical event, and that’s how we celebrate people like this.

“We have to celebrate him beyond the monuments…you don’t just build something and put it there. Let’s do something which is musical which can be maintained.”

He believed an annual musical celebration would be a fitting tribute to Daddy Lumba‘s legacy as a true highlife music legend, whose incredible works, he said, will live on.

Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025, after a short illness.

Since the announcement of his death, there has been an outpouring of grief from fans, musicians, and institutions across the country.

In a public statement released by the Fosu family on July 27, 2025, they expressed their appreciation for the love, prayers, and support they have received so far.

The family shared details of some of the initial arrangements made to honour the music legend.

One of them is the Book of Condolence, which has been opened to give friends, fans, colleagues, and the general public a chance to pay their final respects and share their memories of the late singer.
