Media personality, DJ Slim, has expressed concern over Ghanaians’ habit of idolising foreign award schemes while overlooking local ones.
Speaking during a discussion on Hitz FM with Doreen Avio on May 8, 2025, DJ Slim emphasised the importance of fully supporting and promoting Ghana’s own award schemes, particularly the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).
“There are stakeholders in every award scheme, whether it’s the organisers or the artistes whose songs and work are being used to drive the scheme. All stakeholders must be involved in its promotion,” he said.
He criticised the behaviour of some artistes who, despite being nominated in relatively unknown international award schemes, boast about them at home while showing little regard for Ghanaian platforms.
“I’ve seen artistes nominated in international schemes that aren’t even globally recognized, but they come and rub it in our faces. We cannot idolize other award schemes and forget our own, it’s impossible,” DJ Slim stressed.
He added, “These same artistes later turn around and cry out for support, forgetting that the ‘G’ in TGMA stands for Ghana. If it’s a Ghanaian award scheme and you’re demanding support, then why aren’t you promoting it like you should?”
Touching on the obsession with international awards like the Grammys, DJ Slim questioned whether Ghanaian artistes would’ve been interested if global stars hadn’t made it prestigious.
“If it weren’t for artistes like Jay Z, Beyoncé, and others who have won and spoken about the prestige of the Grammys, would you have cared about it? Now some artistes act like it’s some sort of power move to pretend they don’t care,” he noted.
