Ing. David Asamoah, the acting managing director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has announced that independent power producer (IPP) Sunon Asogli will soon resume operations after a temporary halt due to unpaid debts. Ghanaian history books

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Mr Asamoah confirmed that negotiations to resolve the issue are almost complete, and the power producer is set to return in the coming weeks.

“Sunon Asogli has gone off because of debts. But the good news about Sunon Asogli is that they are going to be back in the coming weeks because we have almost resolved the issue that made them go off,” Asamoah explained.

The company had suspended its operations as a result of insufficient payments from ECG.

However, Asamoah revealed that ECG had begun paying Sunon Asogli on a weekly basis rather than monthly, in a bid to address the situation and demonstrate commitment to the arrangement. “We started paying them on a weekly basis, not monthly,” he said.

To show good faith, Asamoah added that ECG had already begun the new payment schedule starting from October 8, 2024.

While payments were made for two weeks, the amount paid was still insufficient, which led to Sunon Asogli’s decision to suspend operations.

“We paid that week, then the following week, but because the payments were insufficient, they [Asogli] decided not to resume operations,” Asamoah explained.
