Popular Ghanaian rapper, Dadie Opanka, has stated that Ghana is not losing its December in Ghana initiative but rather failing to fully appreciate and protect its value.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM on January 13, 2025, Opanka mentioned that December in Ghana has become a major attraction not only for Ghanaians abroad but also for the wider diasporan market.

“I think we are not losing anything. We are the ones trying to lose what we have. Honestly, our December in Ghana is a big thing overseas,” he said.

He added, “Not to even the Ghanaian communities but to the diasporas. They’re always excited whenever Ghana is mentioned. They want to have the feel of December in Ghana so it’s a big thing.”

Opanka expressed concern that Ghanaians often fail to recognise the importance of what they have, which gives room for competition from other countries.

“It’s something for Ghana that our people would really hold it high. We don’t see the value of what we have and that’s why Nigeria wants to take over,” he stated.

He also alleged that some negative narratives about Ghana, including reports of police arrests, are being exaggerated to damage the country’s image, but insisted such actions cannot ruin Detty December.

“If you check well, there’s a propaganda where they will say that the police had arrested someone and they’re just doing that to mess up the name Ghana has, but that can’t spoil Detty December,” he noted.

Opanka stressed that Ghana must make a conscious effort to protect and promote the initiative or risk losing it.

“We either have to hold it high or lose it. People have realised that December in Africa is Ghana,” he added.
