At the Global Fashion Week in Accra on November 24, 2024, Amelia Edwards, the Second Secretary of the Australian High Commission in Ghana, highlighted the crucial role of the fashion industry in empowering Ghanaian women economically.

In her speech, Edwards pointed out that the fashion industry offers a unique opportunity to address inequality and foster inclusivity.

She called on investors and stakeholders to prioritize the development of this sector to create economic opportunities for women.

Edwards reaffirmed the Australian government’s dedication to supporting Ghana’s fashion industry. She explained that the High Commission’s collaboration with the Global Fashion Week organizers reflects their belief in the potential of a vibrant fashion industry to enhance the lives of Ghanaian women.

She shared the success story of a Ghanaian Australian fashion brand, Yevu Clothing that has made significant strides in both countries, providing numerous job opportunities for Ghanaian women.

“This is our second collaboration with Global Ovation to bring an Australian touch to this special event. We are proud to support this initiative. It’s exciting to witness the fusion of Ghana’s rich textile heritage with Australian fashion. This partnership is truly remarkable,” Edwards said.

“Australia is committed to leading in creativity, innovation, and inclusivity. We aim to inspire individuals and communities to share their stories through their crafts and showcase them to the world,” she added.

The Global Fashion Week featured an impressive display of Ghanaian and Australian fashion, along with the works of photographer Sean Okkai and a tasting of premium Australian wine.
