There was drama both on and off the pitch on Sunday, May 4, 2025, as Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko played out a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium.
But before a ball was even kicked, chaos erupted at the entrance to the inner perimeter when Hearts legend Don Bortey was denied entry.
The former winger, once adored for his exploits in the famous Phobian shirt, arrived at the venue with a small entourage but was surprisingly stopped by security personnel, who insisted he lacked the necessary accreditation.
Tensions flared as Bortey’s associates argued with officials, demanding he be allowed into the pitch area.
The commotion attracted dozens of onlookers, briefly disrupting the pre-match atmosphere.
Eventually, order was restored, but the incident cast a shadow over the fixture’s build-up. On the field, Hearts of Oak and Kotoko delivered a tense and fiercely contested clash that ultimately failed to produce a goal but was rich in drama and intensity.
Kotoko started on the front foot, quickly asserting dominance and creating early chances. However, Benjamin Asare, in the Hearts goal, played a key role in keeping his side in the game, producing several crucial saves in the first half.
Hearts grew into the contest around the half-hour mark. A miscommunication in the Kotoko backline nearly gifted them an opener in the 33rd minute, and from the resulting corner, a header was dramatically cleared off the line.
The second half saw more end-to-end action. Hearts started stronger, with Stephen Appiah Asare forcing a sharp save from Mohammed Camara in the 47th minute.
Kotoko responded through substitute Saaka Dauda, whose low-driven effort narrowly missed the far post.Despite increasing pressure from Hearts, particularly through the lively Albert Amoah, neither side could find the killer touch.
The result leaves Asante Kotoko in fourth place with 51 points and Hearts of Oak in sixth with 46 points, with the Phobians’ faint hopes of a league title all but dashed.
