The Premier League opener between Liverpool and Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday, August 15, 2025, was marred by an appalling incident of racist abuse directed at Ghanaian winger, Antoine Semenyo.

The match was halted in the 28th minute when Semenyo, preparing to launch one of his trademark long throw-ins, was subjected to a racist comment from the crowd.

Footage circulating online shows a man in a wheelchair exchanging words with the Bournemouth forward, gesturing towards him before the referee, Anthony Taylor, paused the game.

Merseyside Police later confirmed that a 47-year-old man was identified and ejected from the stadium.

“An investigation is underway,” a statement read, with officials working alongside the Premier League and both clubs to ensure swift action.

Sky Sports commentator, Peter Drury, confirmed the gravity of the incident during the broadcast.

“I am told via the Premier League Match Centre that Antoine Semenyo was the subject of a racist comment from the crowd. It was Semenyo himself who brought attention to it,” he said.

Both Liverpool manager, Arne Slot, and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola were spoken to by the referee before play resumed.

What should have been the celebration of a new Premier League season was overshadowed by a moment that left many in shock.
