Cristiano Ronaldo’s hopes of lifting the AFC Champions League trophy with Al-Nassr were shattered after a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale in Riyadh on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

In front of their home fans, Al-Nassr were knocked out of the tournament in the semifinals, despite a spirited late push and Ronaldo coming agonizingly close to rescuing his team in the dying moments.

Ronaldo couldn’t hide his emotions after the game. The football icon was visibly distraught, making animated gestures and showing clear frustration at the end of the game.

Kawasaki struck early, with Tatsuya Ito putting the visitors ahead just 10 minutes into the game.

Sadio Mané responded quickly for Al-Nassr, equalising eight minutes later, but the Saudi side couldn’t hold on.

By the 41st minute, Kawasaki had restored their lead, and Akihiro Ienaga’s second-half strike gave them a two-goal cushion.

Al-Nassr fought back late in the game, with Ayman Yahya scoring in the 87th minute to raise hopes of a comeback.

Ronaldo had a golden chance in stoppage time, rounding the goalkeeper with the net at his mercy, but his final touch allowed a Kawasaki defender to clear the danger and seal the result.

As the final whistle blew, Ronaldo could only shrug, shake his head, and walk off the pitch visibly emotional.

Despite his brilliance and winning the Arab Club Champions Cup in 2023, continental glory continues to elude the Portuguese star with Al-Nassr.
