Nana Pooley and his wife Yaa Gifty
Yaa Gifty, the wife of Asante Kotoko superfan Francis Yaw Frimpong, alias Nana Pooley, broke into tears after her late husband was named the winner of the Special Fan of the Year Award at the 2025 Ghana Football Awards.
Speaking on behalf of the wife and family during the award ceremony held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre, a spokesperson expressed gratitude to Ghanaians and the event organizers while noting the tragic death of the renowned Asante Kotoko supporter.
“We want to thank all of you; we want to thank Ghana Football for giving us this award. It would have been wonderful to have Nana Pooley stand here and receive this award, but someone has murdered him unjustly,” he said.
He appealed to the Inspector General of Police of the Ghana Police Service to ensure that those responsible for Nana Pooley’s death are brought to justice to provide closure for the deceased and his grieving family.
“So, I will use this opportunity to appeal to the IGP that we are pleading with him; the only thing that will bring calm to Nana Pooley’s family is that the perpetrator of this heinous act is brought to face the laws of this country,” the spokesperson said.
Nana Pooley, a passionate Asante Kotoko fan, was fatally stabbed on February 2, 2025, during a violent clash at a Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at Nana Koramansah II Park in Nsoatre.
An autopsy revealed a 7.5cm object caused a 1.6cm cut to his heart, leading to cardiac tamponade and death. The suspect, Braima, allegedly fled to Senegal, and six others, including Elizabeth Akosua Ntiriwaa (Akosua Black Chinese), were arrested.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, life patron of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, has demanded justice and pledged to support Pooley’s three children. His funeral was held on March 6, 2025, at Heroes Park, Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
