The University for Development Studies (UDS) carved its name into football folklore on Sunday, September 28, 2025, when it defeated Brazil’s University of Paulista (UNIP) 2-1 in extra time to win the World University Football Championship in Dalian, China.

It was a night that demanded grit, belief, and resilience. Paulista struck first within the opening minutes, leaving UDS chasing the game.

But the Ghanaian side never lost their rhythm, dictating play with their energy and pressing high up the pitch.

When all seemed lost, UDS produced a moment of magic in the 92nd minute, equalising to send the contest into extra time. The drama was far from over. With Paulista threatening and their goalkeeper pulling off heroic saves, the stage was set for something extraordinary.

And then it happened, from a late corner, UDS scored an “Olimpico” goal, the ball curling straight into the net to seal the title.

The victory made UDS the first African university to win the championship, sparking wild celebrations both in China and back home in Ghana.
