Corinthians ended their six-year trophy drought on Friday, March 28, 2025, after they held on to their 1-0 first leg win against Palmeiras to clinch the Campeonato Paulista title.

Despite the celebrations, Memphis Depay, who joined the club in September 2024, caused outrage on the field.

With Corinthians trying to see the game out, Depay’s actions infuriated a host of players. The former Manchester United forward, in an attempt to kill off time, sent the ball near the corner flag and then proceeded to stand on it with both feet.

His actions ignited a heated confrontation, with players from both teams rushing in as officials struggled to restore order. It was just one of several fiery incidents in the match, which saw three red cards handed out.

Felix Torres saw red with 15 minutes remaining, while Jose Martinez and Marcelo Lomba were both sent off in stoppage time. Corinthians will now shift their focus to their league opener against Bahia on Monday, March 31, 2025.

Depay will also hope the new season offers him the opportunity to showcase his brilliance again, having scored just twice in 16 games in 2025.
