Fifty-five years on, a resurfaced funeral video of Ghanaian goalkeeping icon Robert Mensah has stirred deep emotions across the country, reminding many of the painful day the nation said goodbye to one of its brightest football stars.

Mensah, widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in Africa at the time of his death, was laid to rest after he was fatally stabbed at the age of 32 in November 1971.

But beyond the tragic circumstances of his passing, the newly circulated footage captured something powerful: the scale of love and respect he commanded.

In the black-and-white video shared online, his casket was solemnly carried by pallbearers through thick crowds of mourners.

At one point, the coffin is gently lifted and placed into a vehicle as grief-stricken family members, teammates, and supporters looked on.

The atmosphere was heavy, faces downcast, and some struggling to hold back their tears.

Friends, relatives, football administrators, and sympathisers trooped in from far and near to bid farewell to the man who had stood tall between the posts for club and country.

For many, it was not just the burial of a footballer, it was the burial of a national hero whose daring saves and commanding presence had brought pride to Ghana.

He was best known for his exploits with Asante Kotoko, with whom he won the African Clubs Cup in 1970.

He was also a runner-up with the Ghana squad for the 1968 African Cup of Nations and represented Ghana at the 1968 Summer Olympics.
