Argentina’s 4-1 win over Brazil on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, was filled with intense moments, especially involving Raphinha.
The Barcelona winger, who had promised to score and defeat Argentina before the game, did not see things go as planned.
Following Argentina’s emphatic victory, members of the world champions’ squad did not hold back in criticizing the Brazilian.
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez shoved Raphinha at full-time as the Brazilian walked past him, moments before Leandro Paredes mocked the winger by cupping his ear.
This provoked Raphinha, who lost his temper and confronted the Argentine players, leading to a scuffle between the teams on the pitch.
Raphinha’s teammate Endrick tried to calm him down, but he remained visibly frustrated and refused to back off until several teammates intervened to pull him away.
Eventually, Raphinha left the pitch, but the tensions spilt over into the media with Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez commenting on the situation.
“It was historic because of the context and everything that was said. We played a great game at home and in front of our fans, and because we qualified for the World Cup. That way of Raphinha speaking adds flavour to a match like this, but with humility and hard work, we gave them a run for their money,” Alvarez said.
The win extended Argentina’s lead at the top of the table to eight points. They have secured 31 points so far with second-placed Ecuador bagging 23. Meanwhile, Brazil currently sit in fourth place with 21 points after 14 games.
