Liverpool eased past Real Madrid in the league phase of the 2024/2025 UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
The six-time winners secured a 2-0 victory over the most successful club in the competition in a fairly eventful contest at Anfield.
Liverpool dominated the game from the start, denying Madrid any meaningful opportunities as the visitors ended the first half without a single shot on target.
After a goalless first half, Alexis Mac Allister gave the hosts a deserved lead in the 52nd minute with a brilliant finish from just inside the box.
Liverpool maintained control after taking the lead, but Real Madrid were awarded a penalty against the run of play when left-back Andrew Robertson fouled Lucas Vázquez in the box.
Kylian Mbappe, who had a frustrating night, stepped up to take the spot kick but missed, as goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher made an excellent save.
The home side was also awarded a penalty nine minutes later when Mohamed Salah was brought down in the box by Ferland Mendy. However, Salah blasted the ball wide despite sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
Liverpool eventually sealed the victory in the 76th minute when substitute Cody Gakpo connected with Robertson’s cross to score with a near-perfect header.
With the win, Arne Slot’s side climbed to the top of their UCL group with a perfect record of five wins in five games.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s poor form has seen them drop to 24th on the table, with just two wins from five games in the competition.
