On Wednesday, March 26, 2025, Argentina handed Brazil a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

The victory officially secured Argentina’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup, while the defeat raised even more questions about the Brazilian team and their beleaguered manager, Dorival Júnior.

With a World Cup ticket on the line, it didn’t take long for the reigning champions to seize control of the match, taking the lead through Julián Álvarez just four minutes into the game.

Eight minutes later, Argentina doubled their advantage when Enzo Fernández slotted home from close range after a well-executed build-up.

Although Matheus Cunha halved the deficit for Brazil in the 26th minute, Argentina responded to restore their two-goal lead before halftime, going into the break 3-1 up.

The second half was a tight affair until Nicolás Tagliafico assisted Giuliano Simeone, who smashed the ball in for his first international goal and Argentina’s fourth in the 71st minute.

The win extended Argentina’s lead at the top of the table to eight points. They have secured 31 points so far with second-placed Ecuador bagging 23. Meanwhile, Brazil currently sit in fourth place with 21 points after 14 games.
