Asante Kotoko’s game against Bechem United on Sunday, April 13, 2025, was overshadowed by a controversial penalty decision.
Referee Joseph Kwofie has come under scrutiny after awarding Kotoko a penalty that proved decisive in the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Bechem defender David Danso was involved in the incident after the ball struck his hand while he attempted to clear a cross with a diving header.
A video of the incident shows that the ball did indeed touch Danso’s hand. However, the angle does not reveal whether it deflected off his head first before making contact with his hand.
Nonetheless, Albert Amoah stepped up and converted the spot-kick, pulling the league leaders level and helping them salvage a point from the match.
Following the draw, Asante Kotoko retained their position at the top of the table but are now level on 47 points with Bibiani Gold Stars, who defeated Young Apostles.
