A group of youths identifying themselves as supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have surrounded the head office of the Bui Power Authority, demanding that all newly employed management and staff vacate their positions.

The group claims that since their party is in power, it is their turn to take charge of the authority’s operations.

The leader of the group, captured lamenting in a viral video, accused the management of squandering the authority’s resources.

“They are sharing money among themselves, appointing themselves as directors who misuse the funds. They travel excessively. About two or three weeks ago, people were promoted or given jobs. Why do we need employment? We employ people to make our country better. We cannot employ people who make our country worse.

“We are here to tell anyone employed, from management to security staff or whoever it is. We are telling them that now our government is in power. As of yesterday, I’m sure some of you are aware that we got a new energy minister. We are saying that all those people must pack their bags and leave,” he said.

He added, “We are fed up. So, all of them should pack their things and leave. We are saying that enough is enough; they should pack their things and go. Tell the receptionist that if she wants to be part of them, we will make sure she leaves here right now. Not even Mahama can stop us because the country belongs to all of us.”

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned the reported incidents of government office takeovers and the alleged attacks on certain government officials by some agitated NDC youths.

Addressing a gathering of guests during the presidential dinner on January 7, 2025, Mahama expressed concern over recent developments in some parts of the country, where angry party youths are besieging government institutions to take over and loot storage warehouses containing government items.

According to Mahama, these unfortunate incidents do not reflect well on the NDC administration, as the party appears to be repeating similar actions carried out by the NPP after it assumed power.

He emphasised that such events, among others, contributed to the opposition New Patriotic Party’s loss in the 2024 election.

“As I said during the campaign, there is no use fighting over political power if we are going to repeat the same mistakes that the NPP made, and that is why I am a bit concerned about some of the things that are happening. I know that in 2017, that is what the NPP did,” he said.

Recalling similar events that occurred in 2017 after the NPP assumed office, Mahama urged his party members to act differently.

He appealed to them to refrain from engaging in illegal and criminal acts simply because their party is now in power.

“After we [NDC] lost the election and immediately handed over, they started to attack government offices, take over tollbooths and public toilets, go to government offices and throw people out, seize and stop people on the streets, and take cars from them. We must not do the same thing. Let us show Ghana that we are different.

“I know that many of our youths sacrificed and went to great lengths to make the party win, but I know that the regional and constituency executives know who helped to achieve this victory. What we must be doing is compiling a list of such people and the possibilities available so we can engage their youthful energies when things have settled. Rather than taking the law into our own hands to open fertilizer depots to take fertilizers or open warehouses to take rice and other items, let us show the NPP that we are different,” he added.
