Some concerned youths in the Zongo community of Sogakope have launched an operation dubbed ‘Operation Clean the Zongo’ to clamp down on rising crimes in the area.

The group began demolishing makeshift structures and ghettos believed to be sheltering criminals following a recent spate of thefts that left residents anxious and frustrated.

Sogakope, the capital of the South Tongu District in the Volta Region, has long been known for its scenic river tourism, mass bread production, and the Lower Volta Bridge, which connects the town to Sokpoe.

In recent weeks, however, the town has been grappling with a surge in petty and serious crime, with Zongo areas reportedly becoming hotspots for such activities.

According to a video post by metrotvonline.com, the structures being torn down were not residential homes but illegal hideouts used by suspected criminals.

They argued that criminal elements have been taking advantage of the neglected and poorly monitored spaces to coordinate thefts, drug use, and other unlawful activities that endanger the peace of the community.

“This is one of the ghettos in the Zongo. Spoil everything when they come, they’ll know there was action here. We can’t sit back and watch our community become a breeding ground for crime,” the report stated.
