Tensions have flared outside the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) Headquarters on June 2, 2025, as supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) demanded the immediate release of their embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to a GhanaWeb reporter on the grounds, the protesters, who began gathering earlier in the day, expressed frustration over Wontumi’s continued detention despite his legal team reportedly meeting the GH¢50 million bail conditions set by EOCO.

Chanting slogans and waving party flags, the crowd blocked access roads near the EOCO office, disrupting traffic, while police attempted to clear the obstruction.

NPP leaders at the scene, including MPs and regional executives, urged calm but warned authorities of escalating tensions if Wontumi is not freed. The agitation follows days of protests, including a sit-down protest by the Minority in Parliament and clashes with security forces.

Former vice-president Dr Bawumia visited Chairman Wontumi on May 30

EOCO has yet to publicly address the bail compliance or the protesters’ ultimatum.

Wontumi faces investigations for alleged financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering.

NPP leaders have accused EOCO of political motives, while security officials have cited ongoing international asset recovery probes as reasons for his detention.
