A group of women in the Volta region has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immortalize the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for his contribution to women’s empowerment in the country.
At a press conference held at Galosota in the Volta region recently, the women who were led by Daavi Eunice Mansah Zilevu and Daavi Gloria Mannah, suggested that President Mahama sanction for a monument to be raised in honour of Speaker Bagbin.
“The Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin more than richly deserves to be immortalized for the invaluable role that he has played in our fourth republican democracy,” Daavi Mansah Zilevu, who is a safety officer and maritime practitioner, said to a thunderous response from a teeming crowd of women.
According to her, “Bagbin’s immortalization is overdue, but if the government wants to pretend that it does not know, from among the many distinguished achievements of Speaker Bagbin, which to base a national award on, then we as women want the government to know that we will be more than content if the Speaker is honoured for supervising the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill into law.”
This was greeted with an even wilder applause by the women at the press conference.
Calls for the Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin to be honoured have long been made, but this is the first time that his admirers are specifically asking that, arguably the most iconic Speaker of the Fourth Republic, be immortalized.
Flanked by Daavi Gloria Mannah, Daavi Mansah Zilevu pointed out that the Speaker has been a pillar in the empowerment of Ghanaian women, and that his supervision of the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill into law is an outstanding milestone.
She praised the Speaker for fighting stigma against female MPs in Parliament and also standing up for the former MP for Dome Kwabenya, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, when she ran into difficulties and had to leave parliament to take care of her child in the United States of America.
“On behalf of all Ghanaian women, we salute Speaker Bagbin for his advancement of women’s rights and also use this opportunity to call on all Ghanaian women to join in the cause to have the State honour the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as one of the most illustrious sons of Ghana and the fourth republic.”
On her part, Daavi Gloria Mannah, praised the Speaker for being a pillar of parliamentary democracy, citing the Speaker’s resistance to bullying tactics from the executive and the Judiciary.
“The Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s handling of the hung eighth parliament has forever set the bar for every future successor Speaker.
His sterling performance as president of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association keeps enriching the shine on Ghana’s name, while his defense of MPs against external forces is pivotal. We therefore call on President John Mahama to honour Speaker Bagbin now because this extraordinary human being has truly been exceptional in our fourth republican democracy, in fact, Speaker Bagbin has saved mother Ghana in diverse ways and we admired the musicians who came to launch a song at Keta some years ago titled “zokakrabi-Ghana”, we would also want to commend President John Dramani Mahama for his excellent performance so far,” she said to another thunderous applause whiles beaming with smile.
