James Gunu is the Volta Regional Minister

The Volta Regional Sports Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Madam Philippina Frimpong, has announced that the region will host a special athletics competition on December 19, in collaboration with Seed Afrique aimed at expressing appreciation to the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, and the Municipal Chief Executive for Ho, Stephen Adom, for the recent rehabilitation works carried out at the regional sports facility.

Speaking as a panelist at the Volta Fair Sports Development Forum held December 3, at the Anyidoho Hall, Trafalgar Campus of UHAS, Madam Frimpong said the improvements undertaken at the facility have significantly boosted its readiness to host sporting activities and will help promote sports development within the regional capital.

According to her, the Regional Minister has also assured that additional rehabilitation—particularly on the running tracks—will be carried out as part of ongoing efforts to fully recover and enhance the pitch following the National Farmer’s Day celebrations.

Madam Frimpong further highlighted the NSA’s long-term vision for the region, referencing the Agenda 2028 initiative announced by the Technical Department of the Regional NSA. The agenda aims to identify, develop, and prepare local athletes with the potential to represent Ghana at the 2028 Olympic Games.

The forum, held under the theme “Harnessing Healthy Regional Talent for Global Economic Growth and a Thriving 24-Hour Economy: A Discussion on Sport, Health and Nutrition,” brought together key stakeholders from across the sports and health sectors. Madam Frimpong’s announcement was well received as a positive step toward revitalizing sporting excellence in the Volta Region.

She emphasized that the December 19 athletics meet will not only celebrate the authorities who supported the facility’s upgrade but will also serve as an opportunity to scout emerging athletes and strengthen the region’s sporting foundation.
