In an interview with GBC Volta Star Radio’s Tony Mark-Boye, Hon. Mawutor Agbavitor, Volta Regional Chairman of the NDC, hailed the 2026 Budget presented by Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, as a “reset budget” that promises to drive growth, create jobs, and transform the economy. Hon. Agbavitor praised Dr. Forson for presenting a realistic budget that is full of optimism and verity.

“This budget is a breath of fresh air, a departure from the reckless and opaque fiscal policies of the previous government,” Hon. Agbavitor said. He contrasted Dr. Forson’s budget with the previous administration’s handling of the economy, led by Ken Ofori-Atah, describing it as “scripture-quoting white-garment charlatanism” that has left the country in economic shambles.

Dr. Forson’s budget, titled “Resetting for Growth, Jobs, and Economic Transformation,” projects a rebound anchored on stability, growth, and fiscal discipline. The budget targets a primary surplus of 1.5% of GDP in 2026, with inflation projected to remain within the 8 ± 2 percent target band. The government aims to achieve an average real GDP growth rate of 4.9% from 2026 to 2029, driven by expansion in services, manufacturing, and agriculture.

The budget has several key highlights, including macroeconomic stability, revenue mobilization, infrastructure investment, and social protection. The budget prioritizes stabilizing inflation, strengthening the cedi, and reducing fiscal deficits. Efforts to broaden the tax base, simplify tax rules, and improve tax administration aim to raise predictable revenue. A “Big Push” infrastructure program allocates GH¢30 billion for strategic roads and bridges, and the government is committed to strengthening safety nets and targeted cash transfers to shield vulnerable groups.

Hon. Agbavitor commended Dr. Forson for his commitment to fiscal discipline and transparency, saying, “This budget represents a disciplined yet forward-looking approach, investing wisely, spending efficiently, and protecting the vulnerable.”

The NDC Volta Regional Chairman urged Ghanaians to rally behind the government’s efforts to reset the economy and create a brighter future for all. “We must seize this moment to rebuild our nation, restore hope, and chart a new course for prosperity,” he said.

The budget has been widely praised by economists and stakeholders, who see it as a significant step towards stabilizing the economy and promoting growth. “This budget is a welcome relief, and we hope it will be implemented effectively to deliver the desired results,” said Dr. Kwame Jomo, a leading economist.

Hon. Agbavitor commended Dr. Forson for his commitment to fiscal discipline and transparency, contrasting it with the previous administration’s handling of the economy, led by Ken Ofori-Atah, which he described as lacking transparency. The party has also called on the opposition to join forces with the government to support the implementation of the budget. “This is a time for bipartisan cooperation, not politics as usual,” Hon. Agbavitor said. “We must put the interests of Ghana above party and work together to build a brighter future for all.”

The Volta NDC is confident that the 2026 Budget will be a turning point in Ghana’s economic history, marking the beginning of a new era of prosperity and growth. The budget’s focus on social protection and infrastructure development is expected to create thousands of jobs and stimulate economic growth. The government’s commitment to strengthening safety nets and targeted cash transfers will help shield vulnerable groups from the impact of economic reforms.

The “Big Push” infrastructure program will focus on strategic roads and bridges, including the Accra-Kumasi highway and the Tema-Mercedes Benz interchange. The Volta NDC has called on all Ghanaians to support the budget and work together to build a prosperous future. “This is a moment of great opportunity, and we must seize it,” Hon. Agbavitor said. “Let us join forces to build a Ghana that works for all.”
