A VIP bus traveling from Accra to Bolga on December 27th was attacked by armed robbers near Kpagto in the Savanna Region.

The incident occurred around 3:45 am, when the bus was forced to brake suddenly, according to one of the passengers John Atirimbey.

Gunshots were fired at the bus, hitting the windscreen multiple times.

Passengers recounted a terrifying ordeal, with many cowering in fear as bullets struck the bus.

The absence of a police officer on board raised concerns among passengers and highlighted potential security lapses.

Despite the intense gunfire, the robbers did not attempt to board the bus and eventually fled the scene.

    No injuries were reported.

The incident has sparked debate about passenger safety on intercity buses and the need for enhanced security measures.

    THE ROBBERY SCARE AND GUNSHOTS.

I was the last person to board the VIP bus at Circle, Accra on 27th December, 2024 en route to Bolga. I misread the time and almost missed the bus by some minutes but for fate. A gentleman probably my age assisted me carry my Ghana-must-go bag to the VIP station when I got to Circle. I carried the other bag. We had a chit-chat.

The bus was being moved when I got on. The driver curious and not too happy I came late said, ‘You people always keep us waiting. You are very lucky. I didn’t respond but went straight to my seat.

An Amicus was on the bus too who called my name. He was just two seats behind mine. Long-time-no-see kinda conversations preceded. The entire journey was smooth until we got to Kpagto in the Savanna Region on the Techiman-Tamale Road. I took a live location after we got out of our situation.

Our driver applied the brakes of the bus abruptly and nearly hit a small Kia truck that was stationary waking every sleeping and sleepyhead. The time was about 3:45 am. All but those closer to the driver thought that was all to it until the windscreen was hit by bullets shot by armed robbers who were just 500 metres away. The suspects, Fulani.

There was no Police Officer on the bus that day and I can remember the concern of the driver and his assistant who’d complained bitterly about his absence.

    I digress.

Our bus was stationary for about 10-15 minutes. The shots kept hitting the windscreen but none penetrated. There was so much fear in the bus as everyone lay flat, others were on top of others in fear while mostly the young women mentioned the name of Jesus repeatedly. I had said my Rosary on the bus and even read the Bible, Psalm 23 inclusive. Needless to say, the fear and uncertainty of the outcome kept me praying the Rosary again which was wound around my wrist.

Strangely, the robbers never came closer to the bus but their shots did. According to those in front, there were about 4 and the one in the ‘jalabia’ had the gun.

They left the scene which was just about 10 minutes away from a Police Barrier. Our driver took off until the barrier where other buses were already parked. Everyone came down to take pictures and at least, pee for the freedom.

The fear made no one comfortable to sleep again. After the incident, I couldn’t believe an older man in a smock who was just two seats behind the driver, got to the middle of the bus and lay flat. Another guy dived from the front seat to the same side almost perfectly, after the first shots hit.

We discussed the incident after we had gotten our freedom. We got to Tamale around 6 am. We took more pictures and thanked God for saving us.

No one could explain why they didn’t get closer to the bus, neither could we explain why they didn’t enter the bus to rob us.

No matter the reason, God did.

Happy New Year to you all and may God bless you.
