Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw, CEO of the Minerals Development Fund and National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has defended the physical attack on former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, asserting that “violence begets violence.”

Her comments come after a clash at the St. Peter’s Society polling station, where Hawa Koomson and the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, were allegedly assaulted by unknown men during the rerun election across 19 polling stations.

In an interview with Channel One TV’s Fauzu Masawudu, Dr. Bissiw claimed that Hawa Koomson’s history of election-related aggression made the incident predictable.

“What hasn’t Hawa Koomson done? Violence leads to more violence. If you use violence, expect it in return,” she stated.

Dr. Bissiw also recalled a past altercation with Koomson, accusing her of instigating an attack against her.

“She directed thugs to assault me. Has she forgotten?” she alleged, referring to an incident she claimed took place in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

Although Dr. Bissiw denied NDC involvement in the recent attack, she hinted that it could have been an internal NPP conflict.

“No one from our side sent anyone to attack her. It might even be an internal issue within their own party,” she speculated.

Despite her remarks, Dr. Bissiw stressed that the NDC is committed to a peaceful election process and has no reason to incite violence.

“This election is peaceful. We are confident of victory and have no reason to disrupt the process,” she added.

The Ablekuma North rerun was conducted by the Electoral Commission to address disputes from the December 2024 parliamentary election and reinstate representation for the constituency.
